Jimmy Lewis shaped his first few sailboards in 1978 for Mike Waltze and Mark Robinson. He had previously been shaping surfboards since 1968. In 1981 he started work for Fred Haywood and Mike Waltze at Sailboards Maui where he was involved with them in shaping some of the very first " sinker " short boards. Often, SUP paddle brands make paddles that use carbon fiber in illogical ways. Just because a paddle is labeled “carbon fiber” does not guarantee paddle security. Danny Ching, who is a resident of Redondo Beach in California, paddled into the record books when he won the Steinlager Kaiwi Channel Solo OC1 World Championship, making him the first ever non-Hawaiian paddler to win the thirty two mile race from Molokai to Oahu. Ching finished the competition in three hours, thirty eight minutes and fifty one seconds, which is the second fastest time in the entire eighteen year history of the race. This also leaves him only forty eight seconds short of beating the record.

When he was as young as twenty two, Ching was the number one in California and number three in the world in the most popular outrigger category of the competition: one-man. One man riggers are well known for being twice the speed of a kayak, and Ching took the opportunity to move quickly in his progress in the sport. He learned from his father, a Hawaiian native named Al Ching, who had started the local Lanakala Outrigger Canoe Club, which is now the largest outrigger canoe club in California with more than three hundred members.

This paddle is created by Riviera, which is operated by Danny Ching, a former member of the US Olympic Kayak Team. Ching’s recent victory at Molokai was said to be among his op accomplishments as a paddler, and also “an eye-opener,” like his previous visit to Molokai for racing.

Ching is known for staying in the water and up-to-date on new paddling events. For the past seventeen years, Ching has been out in the ocean for at least four hours a day, most of the time with his stand up paddle (SUP). Recently, he participated in the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle event in Oahu, Hawaii, and measured up to his standing position as SUP Distance Champion.

This adjustable C4 Stendy Paddle has an 8" blade and makes the entire SUP experience easier, as the paddler does not have to buy a board with a specific blade length but instead can adjust and share with friends or family. The paddle is adjustable from 60” to 85” blade length. You can even adjust the length while surfing! You twist the top part of the shaft counterclockwise a bit and then move the shaft up or down to adjust the length. Then you twist it clockwise and it’s set in place. If I want to knee paddle, just twist, turn and now it’s 60” long. Time to stand up to get back out, now it’s 77”. Time to go in and paddle for a while, adjust and go paddle, no worries. This thing has endless possibilities. The minimum length is 60” and max is 82”. The handle is made of foam and fiberglass, and it may ding your board if you fall on it hard enough (But any paddle will ding your board.) The drain plug is cool because you can fill it with water and then shoot water out of it like a super soaker. It shoots pretty far. Making Paddles since 1989 Quickblade products are the natural evolution of paddle performance founded on years of competitive racing by Jim Terrell. Jim's paddling career began in southwest Ohio on the Little Miami River near his hometown of Milford. The signature feature of all Quickblade paddles is excellent performance. Toro SUP Paddle - Kialoa

The Toro SUP Paddle, named after the sushi cut of one of the quickest fish in the sea, the Blue Fin Tuna, is designed specifically for racing.
It features a Tahitian-style and ultra-thin teardrop blade profile with a Powerhook at the tip of the powerface for adhesion and a solid catch and a powerface dihedral for addition security in the water. The stand up paddle blade and shaft are comprised of a carbon fiber layup created specifically for racing  which results in a faster, tougher, lighter and stiffer paddle.

The Toro was designed for SUP legend Chuck Patterson and is a blend of three different prototypes. It was designed with a "catch", a pronounced curved arc in the tip area. This is there to hook up as soon as the sup paddle hits the water. It also has reduced blade thickness to minimize resistance from the water, creating better traction with the water and avoiding agitating the water into bubbles. Another interesting feature on the Toro sup paddle is its long dihedral, which raises the thin blade core to provide power. The race blades are stiff so as to maximize energy transfer, and there is a reinforcing rib on the non-powerface to reduce flex. The Toro stand up paddle is a tribute to Tahitian outrigger paddlers and is specifically inspired by the Tahitian style of design for paddles.

A very nice paddle for stand-up paddling, and unlike many SUP paddles it's built by a company who has been cranking out tough, light and graceful paddles for years. Werner makes really nice, dependable stuff and the Spanker is totally in the pocket. I've been paddling it for a few months now in both flat water and in the ocean. After getting used to the different feel from my old paddle, I haven't looked back. In fact I haven't picked up my other paddle since I started using this one. It's so light, and the power is there. Yes, it has a larger blade than many surf paddles, but I appreciate this on downwinders or when cruising in the calm. Even when I'm out in the sound on a cold, windy day I don't worry about my paddle snapping in two. There's a great youtube video of the werner rep abusing this thing that gives you a feel for how tough it is, despite it feeling like a feather. So if you have the cash, go for it! - Jason

Designed with a seven inch blade, the Whiskey Jane Wood SUP paddle, is smaller than most. Constructed for women and kids specifically (but really for anyone), the blade size does come with a power trade-off but also makes the paddle much easier and more manageable to handle and control.
