Sawyer SUP Paddles
Bonzai Zephyr Carbon Fiber-Wood SUP Paddle – Sawyer Paddles
The Bonzai Zephyr Carbon/Wood SUP Paddle is about as tough as carbon fiber stand-up paddles get. This was the first product introduced when leading canoe and kayak paddle company Sawyer first forayed into the SUP paddle market. Forty years of experience told them that a longer shaft (which attracts greater force) and potentially threatening surf environment warranted a virtually indestructible and yet lightweight paddle. The result, the Bonzai Zephyr carbon/wood stand up paddle, is an ideal marriage of form and function- it is visually stunning, lightweight, and tougher than the competition.
The carbon/wood SUP paddle achieves its strength by leveraging the best qualities of wood with composite paddle construction. The shaft of the Bonzai Zephyr stand up paddle effectively uses a wood core surrounded in a sleeve of carbon, a clever alternative to popular techniques of using a hollow carbon sleeve or a foam core. The carbon/wood fusion adds little weight while boosting the strength of the shaft significantly. The blade features fiberglass, carbon fiber, laminated wood, and a Dynel Tough Edge around the perimeter of the blade for durability. This is the go-to paddle if your chief concern is balancing toughness and a light weight.

Mana Ellipse Lightweight Carbon Fiber SUP Paddle – Sawyer Paddles
The Mana Ellipse Lightweight Carbon Fiber SUP Paddle is the lightest carbon fiber stand up paddle that Sawyer makes. It’s designed for those of you whose number one concern is getting the lowest weight paddle without sacrificing strength. The paddle isn’t quite as sturdy as most of Sawyer’s other wood reinforced carbon fiber SUP paddles, because the design prioritizes the light weight. However, it is still durable and dependable, as Sawyer products set the bar on the durability front of the high-end carbon fiber paddle market. The Mana paddle also comes in a configuration with the RIP SUP blade.

Paddle Length: U-cut and assemble. Starts at 88"
Often, SUP paddle brands make paddles that use carbon fiber in illogical ways. Just because a paddle is labeled “carbon fiber†does not guarantee paddle security. These blades often snap quickly, or are severely damaged the first time they are nicked or dropped. SUP shops even sell products like the “Paddle Guard,†a $25 SUP accessory product designed to fit the parameter of the paddle. The claim is that this product does not affect the paddle’s performance. I’ve even had this product recommended to me by the owners of these shops, and I can’t help but think a very instinctive question: “Why don’t they just make paddles secure enough to be depended upon without an additional product?†Too many SUP paddle companies don’t.
Even if you aren’t using the SUP paddle as a surfer, the sheer length of an SUP paddle will subject them to a substantial amount of force. When deciding which stand up paddle will fit you, toughness should be a major factor in your decision.
Sawyer’s Bonzai Zephyr, and other stand up paddles like it have a wood core shaft that is strengthened by a braided carbon sleeve. Sawyer knows how to utilize the flex, allure, and strength of wood and complement it with carbon fiber composite technology. For the SUP paddle blades, they use laminated wood reinforced with fiberglass, carbon fiber, and a Dynel Tough Edge around the perimeter (which provides built in protection from damage to the blade).
Mana Rip Lightweight Carbon Fiber Standup Paddle – Sawyer Paddles
Mana Rip Lightweight Carbon Fiber Standup Paddle - Sawyer Paddles
Stronger paddlers may prefer this Rip blade over the Mana Ellipse because it enables more powerful strokes. When stand up paddle surfing, it is important to get moving as quickly as possible, and the fan profile of the paddle is designed to do just that. Created with a hollow core carbon fiber shaft, the ultra lightweight Mana paddle also comes in a configuration with the Ellipse standup paddle blade.

Sawyer’s forty years of experience in the market means that they know the abuse that paddles can take and what it means to build a dependable carbon fiber stand up paddle, a fiberglass paddleboard paddle or a wooden SUP paddle that will endure without compromise.
Quick Draw Zephyr Sawyer Stand Up Paddle – Sawyer Paddles
This slender and light Quick Draw Zephyr Sawyer Stand Up Paddle is known for its durability and is preferred by distance paddlers. The Quick Draw carbon fiber shaft serves as an innovative adjustable supplement and completes what is considered one of the most versatile and sophisticated SUP paddles available.
This paddle is perfect for stand up paddle boarders who usually use their SUP for flat water paddling, but will take the long distances occasionally. In other words, the paddle is ideal for exercisers. Light and durable, the Zephyr blade is designed for higher cadence paddlers, but the adjustable SUP paddle shaft allows for the paddle to be altered to perfect length for the user, and makes for easier storage and transportation.

Sawyer's multi-dimensional approach, philosophy and attention to detail yield superior looks and a toughness that many SUP paddle manufacturers ignore in favor of focusing on a single dimension in paddle construction, like weight. The balance of un-compromised toughness and weight and uncommon attention to craft and beauty distinguish Sawyer as the premier stand up paddle on the market. SUP paddles tend to be separated into two categories: wooden or carbon fiber stand up. Sawyer has found a way to take advantage of both forms and produce expert and innovative results that place their paddles above almost all other SUP paddle manufacturers.
Sawyer Quick-Draw RIP – Sawyer Paddles
The carbon Sawyer Quick-Draw RIP paddle will fit every paddler. Its a tough but light high performance carbon and wood paddle that is adjustable from 72â€-90â€. At only 28 ounces, the paddle can fit virtually anyone because of it’s compatible nature. Blades are a bit more narrow and longer than most which makes them very smooth pulling through the water. Dihedral back for steady smooth, flutter free power phase. The blade is designed with multi-laminated wood with Dynel edge and glass for durability. Perfect for all uses, you have options between .95 sq in (7.375" x 16.875") or 105 sq in (8" x 17.75") blade size depending upon your weight. It features lightweight carbon fiber technology, a powerful blade design, and an “on the fly†adjustable length shaft. The locking mechanism is made of a plastic clamp-like feature (which doesn’t rust, of course) that tightens and loosens a fitting between the inner and outer carbon fiber shafts. It’s quick to release and minimize the paddle length for storage or for a smaller paddler. There are other adjustable carbon fiber SUP paddles on the market, but most all of them use the little metallic buttons on an inner shaft that pop thru a series of holes in the outer shaft. The issues with those is that they rust with use, mostly after ocean use if not rinsed when you get out.

Thus Sawyer SUP paddles have a natural expertise advantage over most all SUP paddle manufacturers.

Twenty years from its founding, 1987 brought Sawyer Paddles a new helmsman; Bruce Bergstrom. An experienced rafter and kayaker, Bergstrom added new ideas to the solid legacy left by Ralph Sawyer. Expanding the line and reaching new customers with new models and designs, Bruce soon found the company outgrowing its roots on the banks of the Rogue River. In 1991 Sawyer Paddles & Oars moved to its current larger and better equipped facility. They are located in the Rogue River Valley, just off Interstate 5 in Talent, Oregon at the base of the beautiful Siskiyou mountain range.
Bergstrom has added to the line with new lightweight materials like fiberglass and graphite composites, which increase the value through weight reduction and strength. The MX-Series of premium composite oars have shown themselves to be the best available, as proven by the thousands currently in use by recreational and commercial boatmen world wide.
